...the laying of taxes is the power, and the general welfare the purpose for which the power is to be exercised."

I Heart Libraries! Please Save The Libraries!

The only downside to the internet revolution; the threat to libraries and books. I can smell Milwaukee's downtown library just looking at this picture and I can envision West Allis', Villard Avenue's, Wauwatosa's, etc. I mean I can see them as if I was there yesterday. But, when I did a search for Milwaukee County Libraries, I find just the main downtown one in Milwaukee, all the rest are in the suburbs. Since when did only rich people need library services? I hope I have this wrong...

Library as Community: A Physical Vision of the Branch Library

“What is the role of a library when it no longer needs to be a warehouse of books and when users can obtain information without setting foot in its doors? (p. vii)” There are potentially two ways to look at the previous question: one as a doomsayer and the other more optimistic in nature. The doomsayer would note that doing a search on Googlefor the phrase ‘demise of libraries’ turns up over a half million returns, clearly a popular topic that would not surprise me leads back to the Library of Alexandria and people wondering what would happen to a library when scrolls were no longer in fashion (joke).

Rich People Things

Chris Lehmann is married to Ana Marie Cox, I've been a fan of hers for a long time. I've followed her on twitter for a long time too but I've lost her in TweetDeck, drat it. I came across this by accident and was quite surprised. If Tweetdeck wasn't hosed I would have known. In any case, it's also on my list. It's comes as an ebook by the way. $10.

It’s never easy being rich: endless tax avoidance, the Sisyphean search for reliable domestic staff, the never-ending burden of surly stares from the Great Sea of the Unwashed as one goes about one’s rightful business. Toughest of all is simply keeping track of everything one owns. There’s so much of it. And personal possessions are just the beginning.
You must keep a gimlet eye, too, on the myriad people and institutions that safeguard your gilded status: politicians, newspapers, financial instruments, branches of government. They all belong to you. But staying on top of what they’re up to is a full time job. What’s an overstretched gazillionaire to do?
